Before arriving in Peru, it is best to know some useful Peru travel tips to equip you as a well-prepared traveller.

2) Peru Airport

All the international flights arrive and leave from the Peru Airport, Jorge Chavez International Airport, which is located in the Constitutional Province of the Callao, 30 minutes from the residential and commercial districts of Miraflores and San Isidro.

There is an exit fee of US$ 25.00 per person, which is payable at the Banco de la Nación at the Peru airport. This amount is subjected to change.

3) Peru Travel Tips on Travellers' Safety

  • When boarding taxis from Peru airport to your hotel, please ensure that the drivers have official identification. Never take a taxi waiting outside the airport grounds

  • Try not to arrive in a new city or town late at night

  • Learn the basics in Spanish before you arrive in Peru. Don't expect that people will speak English.

  • Keep your valuables hidden

  • Avoid going on your own to remote areas/ruins where tourist would be expected to go. Seek local advice or take a guide

  • Leave your valuables in your hotel safe when making day trips or longer tours

    5) Peru Currency

    Currency exchange

    Peru currency is the Nuevo Sol (S/.).Only a few bureaux de change in Lima will exchange currencies other than US Dollars. Outside Lima, it is virtually impossible. US Dollars can be exchanged everywhere and banks, hotels and shops also readily accept US Dollars. Avoid street money changers as they do not provide guarantees, despite of the fact that many of them are registered in municipalities in many districts of Lima.

    6) Peru Travel Tips on Health

    1) A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required of travellers over six months of age arriving from infected areas.

    2) It is not recommended to drink water directly from the tap, drink only bottled or boiled water instead.

    3) Immunisation against typhoid is advised, as the incidence of typhoid is very high.

    4) Falciparum malaria exists in all areas below 1500m and in the areas of Jaen, Lambayeque, Loreto, Luciano Castillo, Piura, San Martn, Tumbes and Ucayali. Consult health centres before entering such high risk area.

    5) Altitude sickness can be a problem if visiting the highlands. Visitors should take time to acclimatise and avoid doing too much strenuous exercise on the day or arrival.

    6) Insect bites may be a problem in the jungle and the highlands. Insect repellent and long layers for the evening are recommended.

    7) Peru Climate

    The Peru climate is very diverse. The north-south extension of the country and the presence of the Andes mountains together produce a large variety of climates and microclimates. In general, the Peru climate on the coast is subtropical and the region receives very little rainfall. The Andes mountains observe a cool climate with rainy summers and very dry winters. The Peru climate on the eastern lowlands are warm and rainy with a short dry season from June through August.
